2- About the venue: Natrani

In Ahmedabad, the Shamiana screening is held at the popular Natrani amphitheatre under open sky against a backdrop of the serene Sabarmati River. Each movie is introduced by Cyrus Dastur who gives us a sneak peek at what to expect. The mélange of emotions that follow include intensity, anger, happiness, joy, sorrow, euphoria, humor and laughter. Audiences leave their worries at home and come to watch short films under open skies at the Natrani Amphitheater while the river Sabarmati reflects the colors of the city in the backdrop.

In 1994, Darpana’s amphitheatre Natarani, Gujarat’s only state-of-the-arts venue, came into existence to give local audiences the opportunity to see world class performance, and to give artists a platform to build on. Each year Natarani presents close to 80 events, including dance performances, concerts, plays, cultural programmes and films. Natarani’s café offers young writers, poets or music groups its space to hold informal performances, jam sessions and readings. The open gallery space allows Natarani to host thematic events encompassing live performances, craft demonstrations and sale, sculpture and painting exhibitions and specialty food at the café go with the theme.

Watching Short films at Natrani filled with packed audiences from all walks of life is surely a treat for the senses. A place where artists, thinkers, writers, poets, modern day workaholics, students, and many others come together, united by the common passion for Short films, makes the evening truly remarkable!

4- The 'short' cake

As a thank you for being with us for a whole year and for appreciating the marvel of short films, Cyrus and the short gang scratched their heads thinking, what could make this anniversary special? We found our answer in some amazing and delicious prizes being given out at Shamiana this time!

We are feeling very generous at the occasion of this anniversary and so we want to spice up the evening with games, quizes and tons of prizes!

Well, well, we won't be revealing what the prizes are on this blog but the title kinda gives it away. ;)

5- Cyrus: our big 'short'!

Shamiana - The short film club is the brainchild of Cyrus Dastur, who started screening short films way back when the world was waking up to the concept of shorts. Cyrus has created a niche audience for his club which now assumes a cult status among people young and old, flocking for a cup of shorts.

He is pioneer of short film club movement in India. Cyrus Dastur writes columns for Mumbai Mirror and Ahmedabad Mirror, in addition to this he also acts and directs plays. Cyrus Dastur has become one of the prominent names in the Indian theatre circuit since his flagship production WHEN GOD SAID CHEERS co-starring Tom Alter and directed and acted by Dastur became a hit.

8- Our ‘short’ story

Shamiana was conceptualized when Cyrus F. Dastur who realized the importance of short films early on and decided to give Indian audiences its short, simple taste, and since then this club is been working exceptionally well in Pune, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Goa and Ahmadabad.

“Shamiana is just a celebration of life, of every moment where people just want to enjoy their existence and not bother about other things in life. I’d be happy if a person wants to live another day after seeing all the fun at our fest!” says The founder, Cyrus Dastur.

Shamiana was launched in Ahmedabad at the auspices of Natrani at Mallika Sarabhai’s Darpana Kala Academy. Some people who helped in making the launch a great success include Nitesh and Priya Bhattacharje. The people behind SHAMIANA are the pioneers of the organized short film space in India and the company behind the club - TWO PLUS PRODUCTIONS are also into production and distribution of shorts.
